Nutrients

A staggering 360 kg N/ha! But 310 kg is present below 30cm, suggesting leaching of N and poor utilisation/access of crop roots below 30cm. Lentil roots growing through these depths were found to be exploring along weak planes between large clay columns, rather than within/throughout the columns.

Subsoil Constraints and Structural Challenges

High exchangeable sodium below 40cm. Peds rapidly slaked, but no spontaneous dispersion was observed

Conclusion

In summary, Edillilie’s soil has strong fertility potential, but its challenges include mild subsurface acidity, very high soil strength, elevated sodium levels, and nitrogen present at depths that crop roots cannot efficiently access.Managing these issues will require strategic fertiliser placement, ongoing liming to control acidity, and soil structure improvements to enhance root penetration.
